How do I prevent claims?
Coaching tip: Ask your agent if there is a discount for a monitored home alarm company.
Proactive measures always saves money. Timely repair work saves you from paying deductibles and possibly higher insurance premiums. Prevention is always less painful than cleaning up the mess after a water loss of fire.
Most of the claims in Idaho come from water. Control the water and you control the claims.
Make sure that the landscaping around your home is sloped to keep water running away from the home
Thousands of dollars in insurance losses come from the failure of inexpensive plumbing parts. Replace water supply hoses and shutoff valves every 5 years.
Be sure to take garden hoses off of the hose bib each fall. Frozen hose bibs flood many basements in Idaho each spring.
Use heat tape to control the formation of ice dams.
Clean the roots from your sewer every 5 years.
Know where you water main shutoff valve is located.
Have your chimney cleaned annually.
Install a monitored alarm system.
Don't ignore leaking pipes and fittings. If you see a slow drip under the bathroom sink, the problem will not fix itself. Left unattended, it will only get worse.
